Need to add outline to text like with photoshop’s stroke feature. The only option seems to be using borders. But borders don’t outline the text, it makes an inner-lining causing the text to become thinner.

You can convert your text to a group of vector shapes. This way you will be able to add an outline to it by creating outside borders:
